1 in 8 Billion is a browser-based life simulation game developed by Jin’s Earth. It explores how much of your life is shaped by the circumstances of your birth. The game uses real-world demographic statistics from sources such as the United Nations, World Bank, WHO, and UNESCO to determine your starting conditions across 172 countries and territories.
You begin life as a randomly generated baby whose nationality, gender, and family background depend on real population distributions. Instead of choosing where you are born, you discover your starting circumstances and see how they influence your opportunities. The game also lets you compare your journey with four other babies born at the same moment, highlighting the differences between lives that begin under different conditions.
1 in 8 Billion is a game of simulated life, in which a series of decisions and random events take place. After your character is born, you go through the different stages of life and make choices that could impact your future.
Where you are born and your family situation determine the opportunities and challenges you face at the start. Factors like education, health and life expectancy mirror real-world statistical patterns. As you move on, your decisions determine your own journey, and make you wonder how individual choices align with the things you can’t control.
Comparing your life with the four other babies adds another interesting layer. You can observe how different starting conditions lead to different experiences and outcomes. Each playthrough offers a chance to reflect on luck, opportunity, inequality, and the many possible paths a human life can take.
